Day 20 - Casper to Lusk - Storms and Parades

Hard to get on bike today...

...but we have to get to Lusk.

We ride out of Casper with the dawn...

Past the factories...

Dereka smiling as always....

Shirley and Howard wait at a light - rarin' to go.

We pass the ant-like oil rigs slowly pumping energy from the ground..

Casper is a town built on energy...

Oil, gas, and now wind...

I'm glad now the wind is with us...

Maybe I'm just an Indiana biker...

I'm fine if the wind is calm and there are no hills....

but throw me adversity and I wither...

Felt better today...

Al, of course, was feelin' great...

But at first SAG she needed air in her tires...

Rod offered to pump for her but she said, just show me how....

So he held bike and she pumped...

This is an independent girl I've raised.

We leave the sweet smelling sagebrush behind....

We're now in short grass prairie....

By the side of the road I begin to see flowers I know from our prairie back home...

Gallardia...

Yellow coneflowers...

And besides flowers we begin to see signs for Wall Drugs...

We've been seeing signs for this drug store since before Casper....

What's the big deal?

This is lonely country with hardly a tree....

Homes with no neighbors...

Memories of the Oregon Trail....

We hit the small town of Douglas....Famous for the Jackalope....

I don't know why....

I think the emblem of Wyoming must be the dog in a pick-up truck...

Or perhaps the long-horned steer....

Next SAG stop...in the middle of nowhere....

I find Al waiting for me...

covered with suncreen....

Blistered arms from the intense sun...

Is this ride really good for our bodies?

Biking along,  we pace the many trains....

full of coal...

more energy from ancient sun....

I'm starting to lose energy myself....

Prairie flower along the road...

Good excuse to stop for a photo....

Resting my bike in the prairie grasses by the road....

Time for more pedaling...

My legs so tired....

Head getting fuzzy...

I'm always so hungry

Finally we see the next SAG at a roadside table...

Two power bars - quick...

The sky is starting to get dark...

Lightning flashes off in the distance...

Storms to either side of us....

Al bikes quickly to escape the storm...

We find a haven at the Three Sisters Truck Stop...

We stop to wait out the storm...

our little bikes under shelter....

along with bigger bikes.....

Luckily Three Sisters is known for their pies...

Soon we are joined by our friends...

Ian, Ellen, and Phillip...

Bike leader, Mike Munk, has grounded them...

No more biking till the storm has passed...

As the rain lets up, the big bikers head on out....

We watch them go....

Curious at their own style of biker clothes....

Mike intently scans the sky...

Very cautious....

Finally he gives the sign we can leave...

With new pie-energy legs, we bike with the tailwind into the town of Lusk...

Just in time for the annual parade...

This reminds me of the parades back home in New Castle...

Half the population in the parade...

the other half watching...

Kids picking up candy tossed from the cars...

They have "Indians"...

...and cowboys...

Old cars...

....and tractors....

As the parade trundles down to the end of Main Street...

fatigue sets in...

Time to settle in to the Covered Wagon Motel...

..and get some sleep...
